UPDATE (May 13, 2024) - NU's shot at history.

Over the weekend, the Bulldogs beat the Golden Spikers for the first time in UAAP Season 86, taking a swift sweep in Game 1 of the Finals.

The timing couldn't have been more perfect, as NU now sets its sights on complete a rare and historic four-peat in UAAP men's volleyball, with Game 2 set for Wednesday, May 15.

After a tough Season 86 Final Four where they endured their own share of challenges, National University and the University of Santo Tomas once again see each other in a familiar setting: the UAAP Finals.

For the first time since Season 79, the Bulldogs lost their no. 1 ranking and had to play an extra playoff before the Final Four proper.

Nevertheless, NU still made a ninth-straight Finals, with the Bulldogs looking to win a fourth-straight UAAP title.

Should the Bulldogs pull this championship off, they will be the first four-peat team in the UAAP since… UST.

And so the Golden Spikers not only have revenge on their mind after losing last year’s Finals, the latest batch of UST Tiger Spikers have history to protect.

Making history will not be something new for the Season 86 UST crew.

The Golden Spikers endured an up-and-down season, falling to fourth. However, seeding hardly mattered as they booked a return trip to the Finals anyway, becoming the first no. 4 seed to do so.

MVP Josh Ybañez remains top tier, and UST’s supporting cast has come alive in the Final Four, drawing big games from the likes of Gboy De Vega, Sherwin Umandal, and Paul Colinares.

However, the Bulldogs are a modern-day dynasty for a reason.

Graduating star setter Owa Retamar looks to end his UAAP career with another title, and the weapons at his disposal are among the best in the league with Buds Buddin, Nico Almendras, Leo Aringo, and Jade Disquitado.
