Big men Victor Wembanyama and Joel Embiid will not be suiting up for France in the FIBA World Cup. It's okay, Les Bleus got Rudy Gobert.
And basketball fans can expect a showdown in Group H as Latvia called up Kristaps Porzingis to lead the squad in their first-ever FIBA World Cup.
France released its 12-man roster, which features the return of stalwarts Nando de Colo and Nicolas Batum. The two did not play in the 2022 EuroBasket, where Les Bleus fell to Spain in the finals.
But there's plenty of familiarities, as De Colo and Batum were part of the French squad which battled Team USA in the Tokyo 2020 gold medal match, along with Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, Frank Ntilikina, Guerschon Yabusele, and Mustapha Fall.
So, coach Vincent Collet isn't losing too much grief when European Qualifiers star and San Antonio Spurs' overall 2023 top draft pick Victor Wembanyama opted to skip the FIBA World Cup to focus on his NBA career.
Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid, who became a French citizen last year, also chose to work in the NBA. But he would eventually have to decide whether he would play for France or the United States.
Meanwhile, new Boston Celtics big man Kristaps Porzingis will be leading Latvia in its first-ever FIBA World Cup. The 7-foot-3 star averaged 25.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game in the European Qualifiers.
Joining him in wearing the maroon jersey is NBA forward Davis Bertans of the Dallas Mavericks, who averaged 12.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
This may be Latvia's World Cup debut, but the team established themselves in the qualifiers with 11 straight wins and is second-best in three-point shooting with a 37.5% accuracy.
The two teams will also be taking on Canada and Lebanon in Group H at the Indonesia Arena.
