First, it was Team USA sending a team of up-and-comers bereft of the NBA’s biggest superstars. Then, it was Nikola Jokic begging off from playing for Serbia. Even fan favorite Jose Alvarado passed up on the chance to play for Puerto Rico in the FIBA World Cup.

Now, another big star—Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks—has made it official that he will not be coming to Manila later this month. The two-time MVP and leader of Greece announced the news on social media.

“Everyone knows my passion and love for my National Team has and never will change. Since the conclusion of my NBA season I have been pushing my body to the limits to be the player I need to be to help our team achieve the goals we set,” Antetokounmpo began.

But, it turns out, the Greek Freak may have pushed too much.

“After months of work and multiple meetings with medical staff it is clear that I am not ready to compete in the level that I need to be to participate in the World Cup,” Antetokounmpo continued. “This was not a choice but my only option in ensuring I get back to the level of basketball I have worked so hard to achieve so far in my career.

However, the 28-year-old NBA champion made it clear that he is looking ahead to an equally big goal.

“I am extremely disappointed in this outcome but this was a decision made with the medical staff. I’m going to continue to push myself to be ready for the next time my name is called,” he added. “My personal, and our ultimate team goal, is to qualify for the 2024 Olympics games, and it will be an honor to represent my National Team next year.”

With Antetokounmpo out as well, the biggest star Filipino hoops fans will likely get to see in person in the FIBA World Cup other than Gilas' Jordan Clarkson will be Luka Doncic—that is, if Slovenia makes it to the quarterfinals.
