Magnifico hasn't fought since May, but he is looking to level up at 130.
It looks like Mark Magsayo is bringing his power and speed up a division.
Earlier this year, the former WBC featherweight champion announced he will be moving up to the junior lightweight division after initially intimating such a move on social media.
And while moving up a division can mean a fighter being slower and less powerful due to the added weight, it appears that it is not the case for the man known in boxing circles as “Magnifico”—ostensibly due to a slew of magnificent performances in his relatively young career.
In fact, there is video evidence that Magsayo is as strong and as fast as he has ever been.
On his Instagram, the 28-year-old southpaw posted a video of himself hitting the heavy bag with the speed and ferocity he has been known for in his steady rise to championship-caliber status. The punches come fast and are evidently powerful, so much that Magsayo dislodged the heavy bag—as if telling the Filipino pugilist, “No mas.”
Take a look:
Magsayo, who is coming off back-to-back losses to featherweight contenders Rey Vargas and Brandon Figueroa, has no fight scheduled just yet. Nonetheless, he had already stated that he wants to fight only the best at the 130-pound division. That means names like Oscar Valdez, O’Shaquie Foster, and Emmanuel Navarrete, who are among the top dogs in the junior lightweight division.
Regardless of who Magsayo faces next, it can be argued that his debut at 130 is a virtual must-win, as another loss will take the luster off the Filipino’s once shiny career.
It is a good thing then that he looks all set at his new weight.
