Yes, Kai is a Halloween costume now.
Kai Sotto is a 7-foot-3 Filipino basketball player. He’s pretty agile and quick for his size. He can catch lobs and flush down the rock with authority. Perhaps the most impressive facet of his game is his shot-blocking. When inspired, Kai can be a swat machine a la Victor Wembanyama. Okay, that may be a reach but you get the gist.
Oh, and he’s just 21 years old. The potential to become a dominant force in the paint is still there.
With that, it’s not surprising at all to see kids and basketball fans in general fawn over Sotto. Given his physical and basketball attributes, idolizing the Hiroshima Dragonflies star is perfectly justified. Well, idolizing Kai at this point in time has reached a new level.
In celebration of Halloween, several Filipino hoop fans have come out dressed as the monolithic Japan B.League Asian import. Basketball vlogger Hoop Junkie was able to scour the internet and find photos of these Kai Sotto-impersonators, which the real Kai himself thought was quite amusing. Well, he loved the Kai-inspired get-ups to be exact.
“Ayeeee, I love it, man,” Sotto wrote over a photo of a guy imitating his signature pose, which shows him tugging at the Gilas Pilipinas jersey to emphasize the “Pilipinas” at the front.
But wait, there’s more!
Another guy went out and did his best Kaiju impression, to which Sotto responded with a fire emoji to show his appreciation.
Copying Kai’s look and swag is great and all but it’s best if they could practice stilt walking as well for the full effect.
And maybe the internet will find that out soon enough as well. After all, there's still some time for some more Halloween hijinks.
