Fil-Am LSU gymnast Aleah Finnegan began her 2025 US NCAA season with a bang as she ended up as the top-performing gymnast all-around after Week 1 competitions, finishing ahead of Olympic champion Jade Carey.

Finnegan, who propelled no. 2 LSU to a big win over Iowa State in their season opener during the weekend, tallied an all-around score of 39.725, riding on dazzling routines on the floor, beam, and vault, among others.

She finished ahead of Carey, who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Carey most recently won the gold in team from the Olympics in Paris last year, along with a bronze in the vault.

In Tokyo, Carey captured gold in the floor exercise.

Carey competes for Oregon State and is tied at second place so far with Oklahoma’s Faith Torrez with a score of 39.625.

Freshman Kailin Chio, Finnegan’s teammate in LSU, is at 4th with a score of 39.575.

The LSU Tigers are the defending champions in NCAA women’s gymnastics and had their banner raised during the weekend when they faced Iowa State. However, LSU is currently second in the team standings behind Oklahoma.

Finnegan’s all-around performance against Iowa State was also the highest-ever for an LSU gymnast on opening night. She was also voted as SEC Gymnast of the Week.

“Senior year is going to be good,” wrote LSU.

Finnegan and the rest of the LSU Tigers return on Saturday, January 11, at the Sprouts Farmers Market Collegiate Quad at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma.
