The doubles partnership between Alex Eala and Katie Volynets proved to be short lived in Portugal, with the duo losing their Round of 16 match at the Oeiras Ladies Open.
Foes-turned-partners Alex Eala and Katie Volynets were unable to complete a set 2 comeback as they fell against the 4-seed duo Christina Rosca and Carmen Corley in their Round of 16 match at the Oeiras Ladies Open, 3-6, 4-6, on Wednesday night (Manila time).
Eala and Volynets tried to fight back from being down 3-5 in set 2, serving a love game to get to within 4-5.
But Rosca and Corley took advantage of their better chemistry as they breezed to the victory in an hour and 14 minutes, thus ending Eala and Volynets’ journey in doubles in Portugal after just one match.
However, both Eala and Volynets will move on in the singles tournament, with the two of them being the no. 1 and no. 2 seeds, respectively.
Eala, for her part, will face Panna Udvardy of Hungary in the Round of 16 which is slated for Thursday (Manila time).
Volynets will be met by Slovenian hitter Tamara Zidanšek in her Round of 16 match.
Eala is chasing her first WTA title, while Volynets is already the owner of one WTA Challenger title which she won back in June 2024.
