Just like with any other career, longevity in basketball comes with continuous learning.
Glenn Khobuntin is by no stretch of the imagination a superstar in the PBA. But to stay in the league for eight years, being a serviceable forward for all three teams he’s been a part of, is an achievement to be proud of on its own. The way his career has turned out, it appears that he’ll be adding more seasons to what already is a decent professional career.
Fresh off winning the 2023 Governors’ Cup crown, Khobuntin, along with his TNT Tropang Giga teammates Kelly and Mikey Williams, guested on the sports show The Game, where they talked about TNT’s recent title run, and several other topics.
One subject that the former National University Bulldog touched on was the need for him to sharpen his three-point shot.
“Kailangan kasi. Imagine, [may] Roger Pogoy, Calvin Oftana, Mikey Williams, then if ako ‘yung nandoon sa floor, ako ‘yung iniiwan nila sa three-points. They’re playing the percentage [game] so, I need to adapt,” Khobuntin explained on Monday.
“I need to work hard everyday para makatulong din talaga sa kanila. So, when Mikey drives and sees me in the corner, I have to take [the three-pointer],” he added.
Inadvertently, the 6-foot-4 pride of Cagayan de Oro dropped a gem as he described the importance of continuous learning and improvement in the pro ranks. Just like he said, he needed to adapt to the evolution of the game to help his squad become successful. Being left behind may mean warming the TNT bench, which may then snowball into being pushed out of the league.
Hear that, Ben Simmons?
In the recently concluded Governors’ Cup finals, Khobuntin was able to hit a total of seven triples as TNT dethroned Ginebra in six games. This offseason, expect the 31-year-old cager to improve his shooting even more.
