In an electric finish, Meralco beats its "Final Boss" to win PBA title

In a finish that was fitting of the PBA’s crown jewel conference, the Meralco Bolts seized their first-ever title with an electric Game 6 win over San Miguel Sunday at the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Meralco led by as many as many 17 and didn’t trail once in Game 6. However, ghosts of previous Finals losses appeared to haunt the Bolts anew as the Beermen managed to tie things up at 78 with 3.3 seconds left.

 

The one responsible? June Mar Fajardo, who hit only his second triple of the Philippine Cup.

 

But as fate would have it, Chris Newsome answered the call some two game-time seconds later, hitting a tough fallaway that would be marked in history as the shot that gave the Bolts their breakthrough championship.

 

The title win comes as Meralco endured four previous Finals losses, all in the Governors’ Cup at the hands of Ginebra.

 

Meralco beat Ginebra in seven games in the semis to arrange the title showdown against the Beermen, and in line with their previous history, the Bolts played spoiler to San Miguel’s march to a new PBA dynasty.
