Former NorthPort Batang Pier player John Amores recently stopped by Filipino content creator and pawnshop owner Boss Toyo’s place to sell two notable items: his Jose Rizal University (JRU) jersey and a letter from Vice President Sara Duterte.
New year, new goals?
Former NorthPort Batang Pier player John Amores recently made his way to renowned Filipino content creator and pawnshop owner Boss Toyo to sell two controversial items.
The first was his Jose Rizal University basketball jersey, the same one worn during the infamous brawl with players from the College of Saint Benilde in NCAA Season 98.
The second item was an official letter from Vice President Sara Duterte, which he had received after the incident.
"Mataas 'yun. Alam mo kung bakit? Steph Curry signature jersey, meron tayong mabibili na P70,000 to P80,000. Other great jerseys meron 40 or 50 [thousand]," Toyo remarked.
Toyo then consulted a basketball expert, who appraised the items at P30,000 to P35,000. A second expert placed the value even lower, estimating the two objects at P15,000 to P20,000.
Despite the reduced value, both Toyo and Amores recognized potential in the items, particularly due to the possibility of Sara Duterte becoming president and the historical context surrounding them.
Amores eventually lowered his asking price to P100,000, but Toyo offered P30,000, later increasing it to P60,000. Amores countered with P90,000, and after further negotiation, both parties settled on a price of P67,500.
Amores shared that he intends to use the money to fund his future business venture—a lechon manok restaurant.
“Habang wala ako sa PBA, pangdadagdag ko siya sa pag-o-open ng business. Meron akong gusto, ‘yung lechon manok,” Amores said. He added that he plans to call his business “Amores Lechon Manok: Mapapa-knockout ka sa sarap.”
Boss Toyo also took the opportunity to advise Amores on his future, urging him to change his attitude if he ever returns to professional basketball.
“Kapag nakabangon ka, kapag nakabalik ka, at naging maayos ka, maganda ito. This will serve as a lesson to everyone with the same na nangyari sa iyo,” Toyo said.
“Pero kailangan talaga ayusin mo ‘yung buhay mo… Parang binalewala mo ‘yung sinabi ni VP Sara dito (sa letter), binalewala ‘yung ibang sinabi ng tao, ‘yung pag-uusap natin, binalewala mo lang ‘yung buhay mo,” he added.

Amores, whose professional license was recently revoked by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) following a shooting incident in Laguna earlier this year, faces consequences for his actions. The GAB ruled that the former JRU Heavy Bomber’s conduct was unbecoming of a professional basketball player.
