Alas Pilipinas will take on 32nd-ranked China to open their campaign in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Men.
After the historic campaign of Alas Pilipinas Women in the 2024 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup, the spotlight now turns to the Philippine men’s national volleyball team.
Alas Pilipinas are set to open their quest for national glory in the Challenge Cup for Men early Monday, June 3, at 12:00 a.m. in Isa Town, Bahrain.
Competing in Pool A, the Philippines takes on the 32-ranked China first, before battling host and the reigning silver medalist Bahrain.

The opening challenge will be against China, the 5th-ranked country in Asia. In comparison, Alas Pilipinas are 57th in the world and 12th in Asia.
Although it will be China’s debut in the Challenge Cup, the Asian powerhouse boasts an impressive track record in other continental tournaments, including a championship conquest of the 2022 AVC Cup.
This underscores the daunting task ahead for the Filipinos, who will be banking on a dynamic blend of seasoned veterans and promising young talents.
At the forefront for Alas Pilipinas are co-captains Marck Espejo, Jau Umandal, and Kim Malabunga.

These three battle-tested stalwarts, who were part of the historic 30th Southeast Asian Games team that clinched silver in 2019, bring a wealth of leadership and experience to the 14-strong team.
The roster also features key players from the Cignal HD Spikers in Owa Retamar, JP Bugaoan, Lloyd Josafat, and Vince Lorenzo.
Adding to the team's firepower are La Salle hitter Noel Kampton and NU standouts Nico Almendras, Jade Disquitado, Rwenzmel Taguibolos, Leo Ordiales, and Joseph Bello.
Completing the lineup is UST ace and UAAP Season 86 MVP Josh Ybañez, who has embraced the role of libero for the Philippines.

Brazilian tactician Sergio Veloso leads the national team as head coach, supported by seasoned mentors Dante Alinsunurin and Odjie Mamon as his deputies.
Alas Pilipinas, after finishing at 10th place in the 2023 Challenge Cup, are determined to make a strong run for the title and significantly improve their standing this year.
