The preparation of Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA World Cup is nearing its crescendo, and ideally, the players should be just a few weeks away from reaching peak physical condition.

That is why some fans are getting concerned with the continued absence of Kai Sotto in the national team’s workout sessions. Since he returned to the country last weekfresh off a stint with the Orlando Magic in the NBA Summer LeagueSotto has been dealing with a lingering back issue.

Nevertheless, the 21-year-old big man was able to attend practice last week, but only to observe and catch up with his teammates, which included Bobby Ray Parks Jr. According to the veteran playmaker, he was happy more than anything else to see Sotto’s return.

“I was just saying I’m glad to have him back to be honest. More bodies here and better,” Parks told Martie Bautista of News5.

Aside from welcoming back his fellow Japan B.League Asian import, Parks also spoke highly of Sotto coming from a pure basketball standpoint.

“Such a young talent that he is, a great talent to be honest, sky’s the limit for Kai. Especially coming from the NBA Summer League,” the 30-year-old combo guard stressed.

Similar to Sotto, the former NU Bulldog standout is also coming off an injury. Most likely, he understands exactly the position Kai is in at the moment. Nonetheless, he’s hoping to see Gilas’ most promising big in action as soon as possible.

“I just hope that he’s healthy.” Parks said.

It's not like Kai is bothered by the naysayers, but Sotto having at least one more supporter in Parks will only help Gilas form a well-oiled team.
