Justin Brownlee is a good basketball player.

But according to Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes, there’s one thing Brownlee is even better at.

Reyes was all praises after the multi-skilled naturalized player carried the national quintet to a sensational win over Lebanon, 107-96, in the sixth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers on Friday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

When asked what impresses him the most about Brownlee, Reyes’ answer was not exactly new and convenient for media fodder. But it needed to be emphasized.

“Of all of Justin’s skills—he shoots the ball well, he defends, he penetrates, he has a lot of basketball technical skills. But the one skill that I appreciate is he’s a great teammate,” gushed Reyes after the game.

In just his first game with Gilas Pilipinas, it was obvious that the 34-year-old Brownlee had a positive effect on his teammates. It’s no coincidence that nine of them scored at least eight points each, with the three-time PBA Best Import leading the way with 17 markers. He also added four rebounds, five assists, and two steals in a stellar debut.

Many have been clamoring for Brownlee to serve as naturalized player for the national team due to his all-around talent. But perhaps even more, just like what Reyes said, because of his stand-up character. No frills. No drama. Just pure business.

“A great teammate, they make their teammates better. So for me, that’s Justin’s greatest skill,” added Reyes.
