As Cody Rhodes finished his two-year journey, he also ended Roman Reigns' record 1,316-day reign as champion.
The endgame is done, and the story is finished.
Under “Bloodline Rules,” Cody Rhodes finally ended The Bloodline’s reign of terror in the WWE, beating Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Universal Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 40.
Amid interferences from Jimmy Uso, Solo Sikoa, and The Rock, Rhodes pulled the improbable victory with the help of Jey Uso, John Cena, Seth Rollins, and The Undertaker.
Cody hit Roman with three straight Cross Rhodes for the win, something he failed to do so at last year’s WrestleMania main event.
As he finished his two-year journey, Rhodes also ended Roman’s record 1,316-day reign as champion.
After fighting a fairly standard no DQ match, all hell soon broke loose in Cody and Roman's WrestleMania rematch.
Jimmy Uso was the first to interfere, before his brother Jey made the save for Rhodes. Both twins were later neutralized, as Jey speared his brother off the WrestleMania platform.
Solo Sikoa, who delivered the final spike to help hand Reigns the victory last year, then made his presence felt, issuing another beatdown on Cody.
John Cena, who was last seen in the WWE being squashed by Solo at Crown Jewel, came to the rescue, delivering an Attitude Adjustment to Sikoa on the Spanish announce table.
Cena's save brought out The Rock, who hit a Rock Bottom to his former WrestleMania rival.
Decked in Shield gear, Seth Rollins joined the match, but was quickly neutralized by Reigns. As The Bloodline looked to take control, The Undertaker made a surprise appearance and took out The Final Boss with a choke slam.
Still with the advantage, Reigns looked to finish off Cody. However, in a moment of hesitation, Roman chose to deliver a vengeful steel chair to Rollins, presumably in payback for Seth's original betrayal of the Shield in 2014.
This gave Rhodes the opening he needed to finish the story, hitting the trifecta of Cross Rhodes for the historic victory under a new era of WWE.
Earlier in the card, the World Heavyweight Championship match between Rollins and Drew McIntyre was equally as chaotic.
McIntyre wasted no time, hitting the Claymore right out of the gate.
But as Rollins recovered, both the champ and challenger displayed tenacity and resilience after both hit their finishers multiple times.
In the end, it was Drew that finally got his WrestleMania moment, winning a world championship in front of a full house.
However, McIntyre’s obsession with CM Punk proved to be his undoing.
As he went to gloat on his title win on Punk, who was sitting on commentary, the Voice of the Voiceless was loud in his assault of McIntyre, paving the way for Damian Priest to finally cash in his Money in the Bank contract.
Priest’s win is only the second successful MITB cash in at WrestleMania, ironically following Rollins’ “Heist of the Century” back in WrestleMania 31.
In other title matches, Bayley beat her former stablemate Iyo Sky to win the WWE Women's Championship, culminating a personal story from her foundation and eventual exile of Damage CTRL.
Bayley's win also upped the women's Royal Rumble winners records to 5-2 in WrestleMania title matches.
In the US title match, Logan Paul retained after a tough triple-threat against former world champions Randy Orton and Kevin Owens. LA Knight marked a successful WrestleMania debut by beating AJ Styles in a highly-physical affair, while Bobby Lashley and the Street Profits edged The Final Testament in a wild Philadelphia street fight.
