Germany's 2024 VNL Manila Leg campaign kicked off with a bang as they pulled off a significant upset, defeating France in a thrilling four-set match, 25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday, June 19.

At the forefront of the Germans’ attacks was 39-year-old György Grozer, who finished with 21 points built on 18 attacks, one block, and two service aces.

Despite this being Germany’s second time in Manila for the VNL, Grozer is actually making his debut in the Philippines while also marking his return to the national team.

Grozer announced his retirement from international play twice, first in 2016 and again in 2020, but would later return to the national team both times.

"For me, this is my first game after [a] long time for the season to finish so of course. I have my mistakes still, and it's not going around, but we are working on [it],” Grozer told reporters after their match.

“In important moments we didn't put down our heads, we stayed strong, and we were fighting against really really strong team, so I am glad and happy that we won today,” he added.

But more than enjoying his first game back, the German veteran was also pleased with the Filipino crowd that came out to support both teams.

"I was really surprised and happy that we had so much fans today here and I mean, two different teams played [today] like France and Germany and there's great atmosphere in the gym,” said Grozer.

“I was really enjoying and thanks for all the Filipino fans who are supporting us and pushing us. It’s really great to play here in the Philippines,” he added.

Grozer and the rest of the Germans will look to continue their fine form as they go up against Canada tomorrow, June 20, at 11:00 a.m.
