Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp played a pivotal role for Team Asia on Day 1 of the 2024 Reyes Cup, securing a crucial 5-4 victory over Scotland’s Jayson Shaw in a tense singles match.

His win capped off an eventful day at the Ninoy Aquino National Stadium in Manila, where Team Asia finished with a 3-2 overall lead heading into Day 2.

Reflecting on the high-stakes encounter, Yapp acknowledged the mental and emotional toll it took.

“I feel really happy that I managed to get through it. I was definitely like a trainwreck out there," Yapp told reporters.

"My mind was just all over the place, but my teammates really encouraged me a lot. They lifted my spirits, and I just tried my best to fight back and hopefully win—and I managed to do it, so I feel lucky,” he added.

Yapp also shared how his confidence wavered throughout the match, crediting his teammates for their support.

"I played better towards the end [and] it’'s really because of all my teammates. They really cheer me on, and they really lift up my spirits,” said Yapp. “I still feel a bit shaky, but after winning the last match, I think I'm feeling a bit better."

The match saw Yapp claw his way back from an early deficit against Shaw, showcasing his technical precision and resilience in handling the mounting pressure.

Despite Shaw's fast 2-0 start, Yapp found his rhythm midway through the match, ultimately edging out the Scottish star in a gripping final rack, much to the crowd's delight.

But for Yapp, the day's significance went beyond just the score. The inaugural Reyes Cup, named after Filipino billiards legend Efren “Bata” Reyes, brought out a unique atmosphere that left a lasting impression on him.

"It's hard to describe. It has everything—the fans and the setup and everything. It’s really fun playing here. It’s really a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There's really nothing like it,” said Yapp.

With his win pushing Team Asia ahead 3-2 at the end of Day 1, Yapp and his teammates will look to carry their momentum forward as the competition intensifies.
