Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, a proud Filipino-American, made sure to catch Alex Eala’s stunning victory over world No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open.

The basketball tactician couldn’t hide his admiration for the 19-year-old Filipina tennis sensation, calling her rise one of the most inspiring stories in sports today.

“I think it’s one of the most inspiring things ever that a world-ranked tennis player comes out of a small place in the Philippines,” Spoelstra said, reflecting on Eala’s historic run.

Spoelstra fondly recalled his first encounter with Eala just two years ago when she attended a Heat game as a fan.

Back then, she was an aspiring player making her first appearance at the Miami Open, largely unknown to the sporting world.

Fast forward to today, and Eala has turned into a headline-making powerhouse, toppling one of the sport’s biggest names in front of a roaring Miami crowd.

“I had the fortune of meeting her here two years ago. She came to one of our games, and nobody knew who she was. She was just a fan, and it was her first time at the Miami Open. And now, what she’s doing is just absolutely magical,” Spoelstra recalled.
