The San Miguel Beermen’s clutch gene took over to subdue the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 115-110, on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The gutsy win improved SMB’s record to 3-1 in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, while ROS remained winless after five tries.
Despite losing the battle in certain facets of the game, such as assists, fastbreak points, and offensive rebounds, it was still the Beermen who won the war. Coach Jorge Gallent had veteran sniper Marcio Lassiter to thank for, as they survived the gritty effort of the win-hungry Elasto Painters.
During the postgame press conference, the SMB headmaster revealed the deciding factor in his team’s triumph.
“Marcio Lassiter,” Gallent simply said.
Super Marcio got all of his 23 buckets in the second half, where he went six-of-six from deep, including three during crunch time. The dagger was his long bomb with only 43 seconds left, which put the Beermen up, 111-108.
Gallent revealed why Lassiter’s performance was more impressive than usual.
“He wasn’t able to practice, I think for about 12 to 15 days. But today, he proved his worth,” bared the veteran tactician.
The 36-year-old Lassiter has just recovered from an ankle injury, which made him miss their first two games.
Gallent was ecstatic to see his most reliable marksman hit the target once again.
“That’s the Marcio Lassiter we all know. So, I’m very happy for his game. I just hope he keeps it up again,” stressed Gallent.

The injury-riddled Beermen won’t see action until December 8 when they take on the NorthPort Batang Pier. By then, an even more prepared Lassiter will surely help San Miguel.
“Cheers to that” is what Coach Jorge would probably say.
