It took less than two quarters for the first official 4-point shot in PBA history, courtesy of Meralco Bolts guard Chris Banchero in the Season 49 Governors' Cup against Magnolia.
Chris Banchero made history after scoring the first four-pointer in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup opener on Sunday, August 18.
Banchero made the shot off a kickout pass from import Allen Durham at the 10:26 mark of the second period that gave the Bolts a 20-17 advantage. The Meralco guard is the first PBA player to make a four-point shot in an official PBA game.
Almost 10 minutes later, another Meralco cager in Jolo Mendoza banked a shot from way beyond the four-point line to tie things up at 39-all before heading into the break.
The PBA had four-point shots in the last two All-Star Games, before deciding to make the shot official for this new season.
Before Banchero's first four-point field goal, Chris Newsome and rookie CJ Cansino also attempted from that range, which is 27 feet away from the basket.
