The Petro Gazz Angels held off the Strong Group Athletics to open the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference.
Petro Gazz raised the curtains of the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference in emphatic fashion after spoiling the league debut of Strong Group Athletics on Tuesday afternoon.
The Angels gave SGA a rude welcome via a straight-set romp, 25-12, 25-20, 25-12, at the PhilSports Arena.
Nicole Tiamzon spearheaded the thrust with a game-high 15 points built on 13 attacks and two aces to give Petro Gazz head coach Koji Tsuzurabara a triumphant league debut.
Marian Buitre provided ample support with eight markers while Brooke Van Sickle finished with seven points and 10 digs in her first PVL game.
The Angels barely faced resistance in the first set as Tiamzon and Van Sickle took turns in pummeling SGA for an early buffer.
Tsuzurabara would then field his second stringers in the ensuing frame, where Dolly Verzosa and Angeli Cane towed SGA to keep things interesting.
Still, Petro proved too strong down the stretch, closing out the second before mounting a sizeable cushion in the decisive third frame.
New Angels Michelle Morente and Mary Joy Dacoron also gave Petro Gazz a lift with four points each, while Ethan Arce added one more.
Fittingly enough, it was the returning Myla Pablo who closed both the second and the third sets for the Angels.
Versoza paced the losing cause with six points, while Cane managed to score four.
Petro Gazz aims to carry over momentum when it collides with Choco Mucho on February 27, Tuesday, while SGA looks to barge into the win column when it faces Chery Tiggo on February 24, Saturday.
Games will air live on One Sports, One Sports+, and the Pilipinas Live app.
