The Petro Gazz Angels denied the Creamline Cool Smashers' reverse sweep bid to take Game 1 of the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference Finals.
The Petro Gazz Angels moved one win away from clinching their first-ever PVL All-Filipino title after escaping the defending champion Creamline Cool Smashers, 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 20-25, 15-10, in Game 1 of the Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao on Tuesday, April 8.
Despite losing their two-set lead, the Angels showed great composure and fightback to take a 10-4 lead in the fifth set behind MJ Phillips, who scored five of the 10 points.
Despite the Cool Smashers’ efforts to cut the deficit, Jonah Sabete proved to be too much as well in the final frame, powering her way past the Creamline blockers.
Needing just one more point to seal the victory, Petro Gazz’s defense shined once more as Aiza Maizo-Pontillas’ block on Bernadeth Pons proved to be enough for the Game 1 victory.
Brooke Van Sickle delivered another strong outing to lead the Angels with 24 points on 21 attacks, two blocks, and one service ace.
Game 2 is set for Thursday, April 10 in the same venue.
