The Lady Warriors grabbed their first win over the Blue Eagles in 14 years in the UAAP season 86 women's volleyball.
University of the East shook off a slow start as it shocked Ateneo, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-18, to notch its first win of Season 86 and first over the Blue Eagles in 14 years in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday.
The Lady Warriors checked a 21-game losing streak against ADMU, which they last defeated in the the first round of Season 73.
Casiey Dongallo showed no rookie jitters as she paced UE with 27 points built on 26 attacks and one ace. Kayce Balingit produced 12 markers while Riza Nogales contributed 12 points anchored on four blocks.
The Blue Eagles came out of the gates hot, building an early 12-4 lead behind Lyann De Guzman and Zel Tsunashima.
The Lady Warriors retaliated with a 6-0 run to close in at 12-10 but Ateneo eventually slammed the door to secure the first set.
UE regrouped in the second, starting out strong this time as Balingit and Dongallo rallied the squad to a 12-5 advantage en route to a 1-1 standoff.
The Lady Warriors and the Blue Eagles figured in a neck-and-neck battle in the third, but it was UE that delivered in the clutch as a Tsunashima error handed them the set.
UE raced to a 6-1 start in the fourth frame behind Dongallo but ADMU would not back down as it fought back to tie the score at 13-all.
The Lady Warriors, however, would make another run to distance themselves from the Blue Eagles and grab the victory, with Dongallo coming up with the final three points for UE.
Lyann De Guzman put in a team-high 19 points and added 15 digs, while Jennifer Delos Santos scored 12 for the Blue Eagles.
