The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Spikers improved to 2-0 after pulling off a sweet straight victory against the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, 28-26, 25-19, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 86 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With the loss, the Red Warriors go down 0-2 in the tourney.

Gboy De Vega took charge in offense for UST, as he exploded for 14 points including two monster blocks.

The reigning MVP Josh Ybañez provided 12 points and 15 receptions. Edlyn Colinares tallied 10 points of his own.

The boys from Recto were ahead by six points, 20-14, when UST’s scoring frenzy gave them the advantage, 24-23. Joshua Pozas elevated for a smart drop ball to keep UE’s hopes alive, but back-to-back smashes from De Vega and Ybañez were too much to handle for the Red Warriors.

Pozas was the top scorer for UE with an 11-point performance. John Aligayon followed suit and finished with 10 points.

UST looks to continue their winning streak in their next matchup with De La Salle University on Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. UE will be facing Far Eastern University on the same day and venue.

It will be aired on One Sports, the UAAP Varsity Channel, and the Pilipinas Live app.
