Sol Canino, mother of DLSU Lady Spikers ace Angel Canino, took to social media to dispel rumors regarding the reigning MVP of UAAP women's volleyball. She also made an appeal to fans in treating her daughter.

For days, social media was rife with speculations regarding Angel Canino's status after some posts suggested trouble was on the horizon for DLSU. On Thursday, the MVP shed light on the matter when she showed up to the game against the UP Fighting Maroons wearing an arm sling.

“She'll bounce back. She’s hurt and she will recover… and definitely she’s not faking this," Sol Canino wrote in her Facebook post.

She further appealed fans to refrain from "dragging" PVL team Akari Chargers, where Angel's father Rodel serves as an assistant coach.

"She's not going anywhere, she's not going pro. She's not pregnant (please stop dragging anyone). She doesn't have acads problems," Angel's mother added.

In Thursday's match against the UP Fighting Maroons, Canino sat out the match. The courtside report revealed Angel suffered a right arm injury in a non-volleyball related incident.

Losing the reigning MVP did shake the Lady Spikers, as they lost a set to the cellar-dwelling Fighting Maroons. But the defending champions managed to hang on for a four-set victory, eventually securing a Final Four berth for the 14th straight season.

After the match, DLSU assistant coach Noel Orcullo gave a brief update on Canino's status for the rest of the season.

"Nagkaroon lang ng accident, cut, si Angel sa arm niya, so, day by day mino-monitor naman siya. Hindi namin alam kung kailan [siya babalik]," Orcullo said.

Sol Canino also asked netizens to be wary of what they post on social media.

“As a mom, I pray that we must be responsible of what we post and comment because somewhere along the way there are people who gets hurt. I still believe in kindness so please just please be kind. 💚🙏”

“WE NOT ME” MENTALITY

With the timeline of their superstar’s return still unclear, Orcullo reminded the Lady Spikers to step up whatever the circumstances are in the hopes of a quest for their title-retention bid.

“Nandiyan si Angel, wala si Angel, kailangang ready kayo," he added.

Player of the Game Shevana Laput acknowledged their lapses in the UP match, but stressed  out the importance of playing as a team not just a one-woman crew.

“That game definitely wasn't our best. Even if people think that's our best, we know as a team that we can do better. Angel is a big factor but there's 13 of us in the team who can step up,” said Laput.

Veteran Maicah Larroza, who played extended minutes due to Canino’s absence, echoed Laput’s outlook.

“Hindi naka-depend 'yung team namin sa isang tao lang. Lahat naman kaya mag-deliver and lahat naman may tiwala kami sa isa't isa.”

The Lady Spikers will next face the UE Lady Warriors on Tuesday, April 9, in the main game at 4:00 p.m. before closing out the eliminations against fellow Final Four-bound teams NU Lady Bulldogs and UST Golden Tigresses.
