Legen...wait for it...dary!

The UAAP Season 87 lifted the curtains via an absolute banger of an opening ceremony at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Look back at the scenes from these photos taken by One Sports photographer RM Chua.

It all kicked off with some solemnity coming from the UP Symphony Orchestra and the UP Concert Chorus.

Several soloists performed--showing off their skills with the cello, percussion, and guitar.

Singer-songwriter Johnoy Danao also lent his voice, while reminiscing UP's return to the basketball championship during Season 84.

"Sobrang iyak ko nung nagchampion kami," he told One Sports.

That was followed up by a drone show accompanied with a performance by dance group UPeepz.

There was also plenty of soul, as Kontra-GaPi showcased their music featuring native instruments.

Maroon 5? How about Maroon 4?

Lean Ansing of Slapshock, Bon Sundiang and Maysh Baay of Moonstar88, along with Dave Delfin of Franco--all with UP roots--performed for the crowd in an energetic rock collaboration.

The energy continued to slay with girl group KAIA took to the dance floor with UPeepz.

Of course, it wouldn't be considered a UAAP opening ceremony without the parade of athletes from all eight member schools.

UAAP Season 86 Athlete of the Year Quendy Fernandez led the taking of the Oath of Sportmanship.

UP President and UAAP Board Chairman Atty. Angelo Jimenez declared the league as the most popular college sporting franchise.

UP Chancellor Carlo Vistan officially declared Season 87 open.

And then, it was pure throwback as the iconic OPM band Erasherheads--formed by Ely Buendia, Marcus Adoro, Buddy Zabala, and Raimund Marasigan during their days at the University of the Philippines--entertained the crowd with a concert that lasted for over 40 minutes.

They performed seven iconic songs: Alapaap, Sembreak, Ligaya, Pare Ko, Minsan, Magasin, and Huling El Bimbo.

It was a rare reunion concert--and their first ever at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

We were floored. We were slayed. And Season 87 has just begun.
