UAAP stars rep their favorite NBA players in style for NBA Jersey Day 2024
UAAP stars proudly donned NBA jerseys during their games at the UST Pavilion Gym last Saturday, October 19, as part of the festivities for the NBA Jersey Day 2024.

The UST Quadricentennial Pavilion was not just the stage for UAAP Season 87 games but also a vibrant celebration of basketball culture as UAAP stars proudly donned NBA jerseys last Saturday, October 19. 

The event was in celebration of NBA Jersey Day 2024, a global initiative that unites basketball fans, athletes, and influencers in celebrating their love for the NBA by wearing jerseys of their favorite players, both past and present.

With the second round of Season 87 underway, the mix of young talent and the rich basketball tradition was further enriched as standout players from various teams repped NBA legends, blending their college stardom with the greatness of their basketball heroes.

UST Growling Tigers: Repping NBA Stars

The Growling Tigers showed their love for the game with a diverse selection of jerseys. 

Forthsky Padrigao, known for his explosive drives and leadership, rocked a Devin Booker jersey, emulating the sharp shooting and clutch play of the Phoenix Suns’ star guard. 

His backcourt duo, Nic Cabañero, went old school by sporting a Dominique Wilkins jersey, paying homage to the Atlanta Hawks' “Human Highlight Film” known for his incredible dunks and athleticism. 

Meanwhile, Ice Danting, representing the hard-nosed playing style of the Austin Reaves jersey, showed admiration for the Lakers’ rising star known for his hustle and versatility.

Ateneo Blue Eagles: NBA Inspiration Runs Deep

Players of Ateneo also embraced NBA Jersey Day in style. 

Jared Bahay stepped onto the scene wearing a Ja Morant jersey, reflecting the electric athleticism and swagger of the Memphis Grizzlies' dynamic guard. 

Ateneo veteran Chris Koon took inspiration from one of the best shooters of all time, donning a Steph Curry jersey, capturing the sharp-shooting prowess and leadership of the Golden State Warriors’ MVP. 

Josh Lazaro showcased his admiration for all-around excellence by repping Giannis Antetokounmpo, the “Greek Freak,” whose dominance on both ends of the court is unmatched.

Adamson Soaring Falcons: Old-School Meets Modern NBA

Adamson likewise paid tribute to both past and present NBA greats. 

Matthew Montebon embodied the grit and determination of Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat star known for his relentless work ethic, while Cedric Manzano took it back to the ‘90s with a Karl Malone jersey, channeling the toughness of the Utah Jazz legend. 

Not to be outdone, Joshua Yerro sported a LaMelo Ball jersey, highlighting his admiration for the young Charlotte Hornets guard’s flashy style and playmaking abilities.

DLSU Green Archers: Celebrating NBA Icons Across Eras

The Green Archers also joined in the NBA Jersey Day festivities. 

Ethan Alian proudly wore a Jayson Tatum jersey, representing the future of the Boston Celtics and one of the most versatile forwards in the league today. 

His teammate EJ Gollena opted for a defensive icon, donning a Gary Payton jersey in tribute to the Seattle SuperSonics’ Hall of Famer. 

Lian Ramiro, meanwhile, rounded out the group by repping Dominique Wilkins, paying respect to the high-flying superstar who made dunking an art form in the 1980s.

Basketball Culture on Display

The display of NBA jerseys added a sense of excitement and camaraderie to the UAAP games, with each player paying homage to an NBA star whose style of play, mentality, or career they admire. 

As the UAAP Season 87 continues, these players will look to channel the greatness of the NBA stars they honor, as they aim to make their own mark on the court, striving for championships and personal milestones, just like their NBA idols. 

Whether it’s Padrigao’s Booker-esque scoring outbursts or Bahay’s Morant-like bursts of speed, the influence of the NBA is clearly alive and well in Philippine basketball.
