The UP Fighting Maroons made sure to follow up their upset over NU with a three-set sweep of the listless UE Lady Warriors in UAAP Season 87.
The UP Fighting Maroons continued to roll in UAAP Season 87 as they completed a three-set sweep of the listless UE Lady Warriors, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17, in their second round encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday.
UP, coming off of an emphatic upset over defending champions NU last Wednesday, did not take its foot off of the gas pedal and took the convincing victory over UE, who had forced them to five sets in their first round encounter.
Irah Jaboneta paced the Fighting Maroons with an all-around game of 13 points, nine excellent digs and eight excellent receptions. Joan Monares added 15 markers of her own.
Meanwhile, Kassandra Doering also stepped up for the Fighting Maroons with eight points while Niña Ytang sizzled out with just six points after her 30-point outing against NU.
Still, it was all UP from the get-go, especially in the third set where they were ahead by six, 16-10, at the second technical timeout after a Monares block on Van Bangayan.
Monares also provided the finishing kick as UP secured the sweep, 25-17.
UP thus moves closer to the Top 4 in the standings with a 5-5 slate.
Meanwhile, UE fall to 0-10 and are out of contention from the Final Four.
Bangayan had 13 points in the losing effort.
