Former Philippine Football Federation (PFF) General Secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes has passed away. He was 66.

The PFF announced Gastanes’ passing on Tuesday afternoon, Christmas eve, and underscored his contributions to Philippine football in a statement posted on the PFF’s social media assets.

“We are grateful for his efforts that made a lasting impact on Philippine football. His legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of working alongside him.” the PFF’s statement read.

Gastanes was general secretary of the PFF for 10 years, serving his post from 2013 to 2023 with former chief Mariano “Nonong” Araneta — where his career was highlighted by the Philippine women’s national football team’s FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in 2023.

He was also secretary general of the Philippine Olympic Committee from 2019 to 2023.

A practicing lawyer, Gastanes also tried for politics with unsuccessful bids in the local elections in Palawan as a congressman.

Though his time at the PFF admittedly had some ups and downs, with some of his decisions drawing mixed reactions from the community, the PFF lauded his invaluable impact in the sport during his time with the federation.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone whose lives he touched through his service to football. Rest in peace, Atty. Gastanes. Your contributions will never be forgotten.” said the PFF.

Gelix Mercader is Gastanes’ successor in the PFF.
