After finishing second in Tokyo 2020, Gabi and the rest of the Brazilians will look to secure the gold in Paris 2024.
World no. 2 Brazil has announced its stacked roster for Paris 2024, aiming to reclaim the top spot on the Olympic podium.
The 13-player squad was announced by national celebrities and long-time head coach José ‘Zé Roberto’ Guimarães.
Zé Roberto, who has led the Brazilian national team since 2003, included six players from the team that won silver at the Tokyo Games: setters Macris Carneiro and Roberta Ratzke, opposite Rosamaria Montibeller, outside hitters Gabriela ‘Gabi’ Guimarães and Ana Cristina Souza, and middle blocker Ana Carolina ‘Carol’ da Silva.
Veteran middle blocker Thaisa Menezes, returning to the national team in 2023 after a five-year hiatus, brings the most experience to the roster.
At 37, she is making her fourth Olympic appearance, having won gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, while finishing fifth in Rio 2016.
The team also includes Olympic rookies: opposites Lorenne Teixeira and Tainara Santos, outside hitter Julia Bergmann, middle blocker Diana Duarte, and liberos Nyeme Costa and Natalia 'Natinha' Araújo, with Natinha selected as the alternate.
In Tokyo 2020, Brazil nearly finished with the gold medal before falling short against the United States in the Final.
Brazil’s first match in Pool B will be against Kenya on July 29. The Brazilians will also face Japan and Poland in the first round of the tournament at the South Paris Arena.
