Decorated Filipino para swimmer Ernie Gawilan failed to advance to the finals in the men’s 200m individual medley - SM7 finals on Saturday, Aug. 31 (PHL time).

This after ending up at sixth place in heat 2 or 11th overall after clocking 2:56.39 at the Paris La Defense Arena.

Only the Top 8 finishers will move to the championship stage.

The Philippines’ pioneering Asian Para Games gold medalist was 20.59 behind frontrunner Andrii Trusov of Ukraine.

Joining Trusov in the finals are Christian Sadie (South Africa), Inaki Basiloff (Argentina), Yevhenii Bohodaiko (Ukraine) and Evan Austin (USA).

Rounding out the eight finalists are China’s Xianquan Huang, Colombia’s Carlos Serrano Zarate, and Neutral Paralympic Athletes’ Egor Efrosinin.

Meanwhile, Gawilan still has a chance to atone for his early exit as he is set to compete in the men’s 400m freestyle - S7 on Monday, Sept. 2.
