Philippine para swimmer Angel Otom makes a solid debut at the Paralympic Games Paris 2024, finishing sixth in the women's 50m backstroke -S5 final.

The 21-year-old swimmer hailing from Meycauayan reached the final by finishing 44.03 seconds in the heats, good enough for seventh place and just within the top eight cutoff.

A few hours later, Otom finished sixth in the final with a time of 44.0 seconds. She previously recorded 43.61 seconds to finish fourth in the 2023 World Championships.

Her idol, as well as the world record and Paralympic record holder Lu Dong of China, won the gold medal with a time of 37.51 seconds.

Otom, who is taking Sports Science in the University of the Philippines in Diliman, will be competing in one more event, the women's 50m butterfly - S5 on September 6.
