The Fuel Masters chalked up their first victory in four games.
When Sean Anthony was shipped to the NLEX Road Warriors, Jason Perkins had to take the mantle of elder statesman for the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters in the ongoing PBA Governors’ Cup.
It looks like he’s handling the job well.
Phoenix coach Jamike Jarin attested to his leadership in the aftermath of their breakthrough 108-97 win over the NorthPort Batang Pier on Thursday at the PhilSports Arena.
Jarin, who also chalked up his first victory after replacing Topex Robinson, only had praises for the “Hefty Lefty,” who is leading by example.
“We all know Jason is a really hardworking player, a very talented player. The things that you don't see about him is he’s an inspiration not only to our team but to the general public,” Jarin said of Perkins, who finished with 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists.
“He’s the franchise player, but he’s the earliest to come in practice," Jarin added. "He’s one of the ones who will stay longer in practice, and he’s very selfless. This is the new generation of players that you want on your team.”
Perkins appreciated the kind words.
Earlier in the post-game press conference, the former La Salle big man also attributed Phoenix’s first win in four games to Jarin’s optimism, which has rubbed off on the Fuel Masters.
“Coach Jamike is a very positive person, very uplifting coach. Even if we lose, he doesn't go out blaming players,” said Perkins of the first-time PBA coach. “When I come to practice sometimes after a loss, I’m very mad, and then coach Jamike makes it a point for everyone to be positive.”
The amiable mentor hopes this win could be a springboard for more victories in the season-ending conference. For now, the Fuel Masters will enjoy this hard-earned victory.
“Hopefully, this would be a good winning streak coming into our next games,” Jarin said.
