Another case to be called volleyball’s GOAT on and off the court.
Alyssa Valdez’s greatness goes well beyond the courts of the PVL. Not only has she won awards and championships, she has also won the hearts of many through her kindness and compassion. These traits simply separate her from your everyday star athlete.
An undeniable proof of this claim is a developmental volleyball program dedicated to the youth sector, which Valdez and her group spearheaded. Working with the Pasig government, the Alyssa Valdez Youth Volleyball Camp (AVYVC) aims to guide young aspiring spikers into becoming achievers. Busy with training and with her many other side gigs, it’s truly impressive how Valdez finds the time and energy to put up a passion project like the AVYVC.
Her efforts didn’t go unrecognized as the Creamline Cool Smashers ace was given a special recognition by Pasig's city council in August. On Saturday, Valdez shared an Instagram Story that featured Pasig’s latest show of support toward her initiative. It was a group picture of the AVYVC team and the participating kids. Joining them was none other than Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto.
“Thank you for the surprise visit, mayor @vicosotto,” the decorated spiker posted.
Heading into the season-ending All-Filipino Conference next month, Valdez has been on the grind. She’s been working out, meeting up with her old coach, and chatting with NBA greats in the FIBA World Cup.
But most admirable of them all is her habit of giving back to the community. For sure, it’s at the top of Mayor Vico’s list if you ask him.
