It took a while, but eventually, Roma Mae Doromal was selected by the Capital1 Solar Spikers as the 13th pick in the inaugural PVL Rookie Draft on Monday night.

Right after hearing her name called, the former Ateneo de Manila University team captain couldn’t contain her excitement as she shared her eagerness to play for the Solar Spikers.

“Siyempre sobrang nakakakaba talaga siya, and very happy talaga na nakuha ako. Very thankful talaga ako sa Capital1 for having me and welcoming me. 'Yun talaga, 'yung gustong gusto nila ako sa team nila,” Doromal told reporters after being drafted.

Being Capital1’s second pick in the draft, Doromal will play alongside No. 2 pick Leila Cruz. While the former De La Salle University standout is expected to bring her offensive prowess to the team, Doromal is looking to bring her leadership to the table.

“I-embrace ko siya kung paano ko inembrace ‘yung sa Ateneo,” said Doromal. “This time, I hope na makapag-lead pa talaga ako [and] kami ni Leila. Super excited talaga to play with her inside the court.”

The 5-foot-7 libero will be playing under coach Roger Gorayeb, who is no stranger to the Ateneo community. That is why Doromal is also excited to learn more from the veteran tactician.

“Excited ako to be under coach Roger and I’ve heard a lot of good feedbacks talaga from him. Super open talaga ako na matuto sa kanya, under sa system niya,” said Doromal.

But the most exciting part about joining the PVL? Finally, facing off against her sister, Roma Joy, who currently plays for the Galeries Tower Highrisers.

Capital1 and Galeries, however, likely won’t face each other in the Reinforced Conference after being placed in separate groups.

Nonetheless, the Doromal sisters will face off at some point, and Roma Mae is not one to back down from her older sister.

“Exciting talaga, alam kong hindi ‘yun magpapatalo. Siyempre hindi rin ako papatalo. Talagang happy ako na this time nasa isang league na kami,” said Doromal.
