Six matches are set to unfold in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference qualifying round, with teams battling for a direct spot in the quarterfinals.

One of the key matchups feature the second-seeded Petro Gazz Angels, who enter the game on a nine-match winning streak, against the struggling Capital1 Solar Spikers, who have lost seven straight.

Scheduled for Saturday, March 1, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig, this clash presents a battle between a team in top form and another desperate to turn its conference around.

A tale of two teams

Petro Gazz has been on a tear after dropping an early match to Creamline, stringing together nine consecutive victories to claim the no. 2 seed.

With a 10-1 record, the Angels have been dominant on both ends of the floor, proving to be a serious title contender.

Brooke Van Sickle has been a key factor in their success, providing firepower alongside Myla Pablo and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas.

Djanel Cheng’s steady playmaking and MJ Phillips’ defensive presence at the net have also been instrumental in their unbeaten run since early December.

Meanwhile, Capital1 has had a challenging conference, finishing the preliminary round with a 1-10 record.

After securing their first and only win against the Nxled Chameleons last November 30, the Solar Spikers have struggled to keep pace with the league’s top teams, suffering seven consecutive losses.

Despite the setbacks, Jorelle Singh, Leila Cruz, and Heather Guino’o will look to lead Capital1 in an all-out effort to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive.

The last time these two faced each other was in February 11 where the Angels barely broke a sweat in their dominant sweep of the Solar Spikers.

What’s at stake?

With a quarterfinal ticket on the line, Petro Gazz aims to sustain its momentum and extend its winning streak to 10 games.

A victory will officially send them to the next round, reinforcing their status as a championship contender.

On the other hand, Capital1 faces a must-win situation. A loss would send them to the play-in tournament, where the Solar Spikers will have to fight for survival in the postseason.

While the odds are stacked against them, an upset over one of the league’s best teams would give them a huge boost heading into the next phase.
