The NU Pep Squad regained their crown in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition with a highflying, superhuman-esque performance in UAAP Season 87 at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.
Built on a theme of “Out of this world,” NU performed a fast-paced, clean routine that featured storytelling of astronauts and extra terrestrial beings. The NU Pep Squad's victory tied the competition record of most championships by a program with their eighth title overall.
NU Pep Squad's heart-stopping performance catapulted the team to a runaway victory to clinch their fourth title in the last six editions of the CDC, with a score of 713 points -- 33.5 points ahead of the runner-ups.
NU's routine included a gravity-defying, windmill-like stunt which had the crowd on their feet.
The cheerleaders out of Legarda thus won their first CDC title without decorated coach Ghicka Bernabe, who has since retired from her post to pursue her personal life with a child and husband.
Gab Bajacan is the lead tactician for the multi-titled NU team and is in his second year at the helm. Last season, NU finished runner-up to the FEU Cheering Squad.
NU Pep's win, which is their eighth title in the last 11 years, meant that they are now tied with the UP Pep Squad and the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe as the winningest programs in UAAP CDC history.
Apart from winning it all, the NU Pep Squad also swept all eight special awards from the competition's sponsors, making it an absolutely dominant performance for the new-age dynasty.
Coming in second are the Adamson Pep Squad with their Karaoke-inspired routine which garnered a 679.5 points.
Completing the podium are last year's champions FEU Cheering Squad, who dazzled with a Frozen-themed performance that was highlighted by a quick-change stunt with a member dressed as Elsa from the hit Disney movie. They scored 650 points.
The UE Pep Squad placed fourth with their SexBomb routine that was personally witnessed by original SexBomb member Rochelle Pangilinan.
Former powerhouses UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe and UP Pep Squad finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Rounding up the rankings are the DLSU Animo Squad and the Ateneo Blue Eagles in seventh and eighth place.
This year didn’t feature a group stunts category in the CDC.
