The NU Pep Squad had a big pay day to sweeten their return to the top step of the podium in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition, ruling the Season 87 edition at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday.

After a heart-stopping, gravity defying routine centered around an “out of this world” theme, NU ended up bagging all eight special awards which came with monetary prizes from various sponsor of the events.

A variety of special awards were given out by the event’s sponsors which totaled a cash prize of Php 140,000 in cold hard bills for the Legarda-based cheerleaders. They were also given smart watches and Php 40,000 worth of gift certificates for a local fast food chain.

Two other sponsors did not disclose the amount they pledged to the now eight-time CDC champions.

The cash prizes were apart from the Php 50,000 awarded by the UAAP itself. It was also matched by a donut chain to put NU’s grand total of cash prizes at Php 240,000.

But it wasn’t just the champions who went home with monetary prizes.

First runner-up Adamson nabbed Php 60,000, while the FEU Cheering Squad went home with Php 40,000.

After the awarding ceremony, NU head coach Gabby Bajacan said that it came as a surprise for the team to win all the awards that they did during Sunday's event.

“Sobrang hindi po namin in-expect. Siguro masyado lang kaming hard sa sarili namin. We did not expect itong award na to. The whole competitors sobrang nag-step up lahat sila. University of the East. Adamson University. Grabe yung mga pinaghirapan talaga nila,” said Bajacan.

“Nakita namin yung dedication ng bawat team ngayon, so we did not expect na mananalo kami,” he added.

After Sunday’s results, NU is now tied with UP and UST for the most CDC titles with eight each. The Legarda-based squad won all their championships within the last 11 editions of the competition.
