The UST Golden Tigresses recovered from a slow start to take their first win in UAAP Season 87 at the expense of the UE Lady Warriors, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23, 25-15, at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan on Saturday.

Buoyed by big scoring games from both Reg Jurado and Angge Poyos, the Golden Tigresses are now 1-1 in the season.

Jurado finished with 22 points built on 18 attacks, two blocks, and two aces while Poyos added 21 markers.

Golden Tigresses had to fend off a comeback try in set 4 from the Lady Warriors after UE battled back from a 10-3 deficit to get within one, 11-10.

But Marga Altea provided a spark for UST off of the bench as they created distance. Poyos then sizzled as the Golden Tigresses extended their set 4 lead to as many as nine points, 23-14, with the game virtually in the bag.

Altea ended up with 10 points as a sub after Kyla Cordora suffered an injury and exited the game in set 2.

UST’s late-game heroics drubbed a determined UE side that dragged UST into the deep waters for most of the sets. They were also on the verge of gaining the first set advantage when they were leading 24-20.

The Golden Tigresses, however, finished with an 8-2 flurry to claim the first set and set the pace for the match.

Khy Cepada, who kept UE afloat for most of the match, had 20 points in the losing effort.
