Thea Gagate has long been accustomed to towering over her opponents as one of the tallest players in the local volleyball scene.

However, her maiden campaign with Alas Pilipinas in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup has thrust her into unfamiliar territory, where she finds herself often looking up at taller adversaries.

Instead of being intimidated, the 6-foot-2 middle blocker has embraced the challenge, leveraging her skills and determination to contribute significantly to the 2-0 start of Alas Pilipinas in Pool A.

“For me, mahirap siya kasi knowing international players, matatangkad sila and di ako sanay. Kasi siyempre, sa UAAP, I’m the tallest one so yeah, malaking experience ‘to,” the La Salle stalwart said.

In the campaign-opening triumph over Australia last May 23, Gagate imposed her will above the net with 11 points, four of which coming from blocks.

Then, on Friday night, the 23-year-old followed it up with another instrumental performance in a win over India to the tune of 12 points, helping push the Philippines closer to a semifinal berth.

“Well, of course, coming into every game, mindset ko lang is ibigay ‘yung best ko palagi,” Gagate shared.

“Ilabas ko kung ano ‘yung kaya ko and anong pwede kong gawin para makapag-contribute sa team.”

Gagate is wholeheartedly dedicating herself to representing the country, driven not only by the pursuit of national glory but also by the desire to make the most out of her lifelong dream.

“Very grateful po kasi finally natupad yung dream ko as an athlete and yun nga, gagawin ko lang yung best ko para mailabas yung kaya ko,” she gushed.

Gagate seeks to sustain her fine form when Alas takes on Iran on Saturday, May 5, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
