Tim Cone gets real about Gilas status and Europe training expectations

It's not a secret that Gilas Pilipinas will have a lot of holes to fill in an attempt to reach peak status ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

The national team has two months to prepare and the group will fast-track its development in a much-anticipated European trip.

Gilas assistant coach Tim Cone kept it real though when asked about the expectations for the camp.

As it is, the national is not great yet. But there's optimism moving forward.

"We're not gonna be great right now, we don't expect to be great now. But we expect to really keep moving forward and, hopefully, by [FIBA] World Cup time, we will be great," Cone told News5's Martie Bautista before their departure for Estonia on Thursday night.

"We're trying to focus on the day-to-day, keep building incrementally."

Cone expects Gilas Pilipinas to be laser-focused in the coming weeks.

"This is an opportunity for us to, number 1, understand the seriousness of what we're doing. We're just kind of like practicing in Meralco every day, there's not that sense of urgency."

Twelve pool members initially joined the Europe camp with naturalized players Justin Brownlee and Ange Kouame joining the team soon.

"We're missing a couple of guys, but by in large we got a good portion of the pool."
