South Korea foiled Gilas Women’s uprising down the stretch to chalk up its first win, 65-59, in the 42nd William Jones Cup on Tuesday.

The Koreans nearly squandered a 40-24 halftime lead after Gilas came alive in the fourth period.

The Filipinas got it going in the final canto and limited their foes to just 8 points. Korea, though, did enough to come away with its third win in four games to move up to 3-1.

Kacey dela Rosa paced Gilas with 14 points, while Janine Pontejos added 12 markers.

With the loss, Gilas now has a 1-3 win-loss record, but netizens were not exactly disappointed with the Filipina hoopers’ performance in Taiwan.

Facebook user Romeo Gomez Gundran feels like there’s much left to be desired as far as chemistry is concerned.

“Kulang pa sa chemistry sa new members,” Gundran said.

Zac Antonio echoed this sentiment.

“May mga new members kasi but that is still impressive tbh,” he said.

Indeed, Gilas is breaking in new recruits Dela Rosa and Malia Bambrick, who played for US NCAA Division 1 team Pepperdine Waves, where she averaged 9.6 points.

The team, though, is also missing some key players, like Vanessa De Jesus, who will miss Duke Blue Devils' season after suffering a knee injury in practice.

“Ok lang yan, dikit naman ang laro wala pa De Jesus nyan,” Benny Fitz said.

Gilas Women will finish off their Jones Cup campaign on Wednesday against an even more formidable adversary in Japan, who tote a spotless 4-0 record highlighted by four double-digit wins.
