Host Philippines has been eliminated from gold medal contention after a tough loss at the hands of Vietnam in the 2024 ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship.
The Philippine women’s national futsal team have been booted out of championship contention at the 2024 ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship after absorbing a 6-1 loss to Vietnam at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City on Tuesday.
Now with two losses and a draw, the Pinay5 can only hope for a bronze medal finish with their most recent result plummeting them to last place in the five-nation tournament.
But before they can even hope to qualify for the bronze medal match, they must first win by two goals against Indonesia in their last round robin match on Wednesday, and also win the battle for bronze against, most likely, the Indonesian team as well.
The Pinay5 couldn’t sustain their play as they held world no. 11 Vietnam to just one goal in the first half of play.
But Tran Thi Lan Mai opened the flood gates with her second goal of the match after the break as the Vietnamese pulled away for good.
Shai Del Campo was the lone bright spot for the hosts as she scored the country’s lone goal of the match at the 15:57 mark of the second half.
The Philippines will thus have to rely on superior goal difference against Myanmar to play for a medal.
If the Philippines can’t win by two goals or more against Indonesia, they will finish last in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Vietnam qualified for the gold medal match against fellow unbeaten team Thailand with one game remaining on their schedules.
The medal rounds will be played on Thursday, November 21, still at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
