Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez expressed feelings of devastation and sympathy to the victims of the Lapu Lapu Day car-ramming attack in Vancouver.
Filipina-Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez shared her sympathy following a horrific car-ramming tragedy that left 11 people dead at the annual Lapu-Lapu Day celebration in south of Vancouver, Canada.
The 22-year-old tennis sensation bared she was “absolutely devastated” on the events that unfolded.
“My heart is with all of you. My thoughts go to the victims of this horrific incident, their families, and their communities,” she wrote in a post.
According to the Associated Press, a black Audi SUV sped down a closed, food-truck-lined street and struck people attending the gathering.
30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo was identified as the primary suspect of the attack and has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder, according to British Columbia prosecutors' spokeswoman Damienne Darby.
Vancouver police spokesperson Steve Addison also noted that of those 11 individuals who passed away, nine were females and two are males who are aged 5 to 65.
Reports also cited that 10 more people are either in critical or serious condition with 32 more getting hurt in the horrific incident.
As for Fernandez, she opened her 2025 Catalonia Open on a strong note thanks to a dominating 6-1, 6-2 straight-set dismissal over Spanish counterpart Lucia Cortez Llorca in the round of 32.
Playing as the top seed in the tournament, the world no. 25 will face Belarusian challenger Aliaksandra Sasnovich for a spot in the quarterfinals next.
