The three round-robin pools of four is a new format for the volleyball event at the Olympic Games.
In this setup, the winners of each pool, along with the runners-up and the two highest-ranked third-place teams, will advance to the quarterfinals.
From there, the remaining countries will compete in a single-elimination bracket leading to the semifinals and ultimately the medal matches to determine the podium.
In previous editions of the Olympic event, the preliminary round featured just two pools of six teams each, where the top four teams from each group progressed to the knockout stage.
The Paris 2024 volleyball event will be held at the South Paris Arena from July 27 to August 11.
