The PBA recently announced several rule changes for the start of the 48th season in an effort to conform more with international competitions.

Many have already given their two cents about the new regulations, including Rain or Shine Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao.

When asked about the matter during the PBA Media Day on Tuesday, the opinionated drillmaster was generous with his responses.

"Magandang developments 'yon. Actually, 'yung rules na 'yon, unanimous kaming head coaches (nag-agree). We were consulted by the commissioner and by the technical committee and we had meetings and video sessions about that. Na-fine tune na rin. Kasi nung unang implementation, medyo rough pa. But I think this season, mas refined na," said Guiao.

One of the new rules is that players can no longer rely on calling timeouts in tight situations. While it could be seen as a handicap, Guiao views it as a good thing.

"It's going to reward good defense, going to reward effort and defensive intensity," he said.

"Wala ka nang bailout with a timeout," Guiao added. "That will also require tactical adjustments sa coaching aspect."

In addition, the coach's challenge will be formally implemented, following the testing stage during the PBA On Tour. Under the new rules, a coach can contest a call once. A successful call will earn another right for a challenge.

Guiao is also especially pleased that the PBA is getting closer to FIBA rules. As a former national team coach, including during the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the 2018 Asian Games, he's aware of how players struggle to adjust coming from PBA guidelines.

"That's going to help our national team, that's going to help players who will become part of Gilas," he said, noting how several teams have been invited to international tourneys such as the Jones Cup and the East Asia Super League.

Rain or Shine, which will parade import DaJuan Summers, will open its campaign in the PBA Commissioner's Cup on November 8 against the Meralco Bolts.
