The Golden Tigresses know it will take a team effort to bring home the title to España
The UST Golden Tigresses had masterful game against the slumping Ateneo Blue Eagles as they dominated the game with a straight set victory, 25-19, 25-23, 25-14.
UST improved to 4-2 in Season 85, while Ateneo suffered their fourth straight loss to fall to 1-5—their worst start since UAAP Season 73 back in 2010.
Tigress rookie Regina Jurado once again proved she’s the real deal with a 15 point performance off 12 attacks and 3 aces. Eya Laure, meanwhile, added 10 markers of her own.
Jurado said this was good payback for UST as Ateneo eliminated them in the stepladder semifinals last season.
“Lagi naman pong sinasabi nila Ate Eya sa'min na in a way parang bawian na din po from last season na sila 'yung nanglaglag, so grateful na kasali na ako ngayon [sa] win today against Ateneo,” said Jurado.
Laure lauded the rest of the team’s rookies for stepping up in games, citing her experience back when she was a rookie for UST, which was then led by Sisi Rondina.
“Siyempre masaya kasi alam mo 'yun, dedepensa ka na lang, siya na 'yung papatay. Parang dun ka na lang magfo-focus eh,” said Laure. “Kumbaga 'yung dating mindset ni Ate Sisi, ngayon mindset ko na rin. Depensa lang kami ng depensa dito, kayo na bahalang pumatay doon sa harap.”
Coach Kungfu Reyes, meanwhile, praised the Golden Tigresses for limiting their errors throughout the entire match. UST only had 11 errors as compared to Ateneo’s 25.
“Na-overcome namin, I think wala kaming service error today. Napakasarap sa pakiramdam na lalabas kami na wala masyadong unforced error,” said Reyes.
