The UST Golden Tigresses reassert their mastery over the DLSU Lady Spikers in five sets, as the España squad now hold a four-game win streak over their Taft rivals.
The UST Golden Tigresses survived a gritty five-set match over the DLSU Lady Spikers to prove they still have La Salle’s number in UAAP Season 87, 25-12, 22-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Wednesday.
Angge Poyos powered UST in the deciding fifth set, as the Golden Tigresses extended their win streak over the Lady Spikers to four games since Season 85. She finished with 28 points to go along with 16 excellent digs, and six excellent receptions.
Poyos helped UST recover from an early deficit, 3-7, in the fifth set. At one back-and-forth stretch, the UAAP Season 86 Rookie of the Year scored three straight points for the Golden Tigresses.
Regina Jurado, who finished with 17 points, brought UST to match point with an off speed hit, 14-12.
Despite a service error from Bianca Plaza, La Salle libero Pia Rodriguez was called for double contact to seal UST’s victory as they improved to 2-1.
The Golden Tigresses are now winners of two straight games.
Meanwhile, La Salle fell to 1-2 for the first time since UAAP Season 68 in 2006 — or in almost two decades.
Angel Canino’s 25-point triple-double went down the drain for La Salle as she finished with 17 excellent digs and 16 excellent receptions.
Canino caught fire early in Set 5 when they seized the 7-3 lead, but was unable to convert on their strong start.
The Lady Spikers thus failed to avenge their Final Four loss against UST last year.
