The gears are turning for the UST women’s and men’s volleyball teams after improving to identical 3-1 records in two weeks of play in UAAP Season 87.

After splitting their first two matches of the season, both the Golden Tigresses and the Golden Spikers achieved momentum thanks largely to sophomore ace Angge Poyos and middle blocker Popoy Colinares.

For their contributions, Poyos and Colinares are named the Collegiate Press Corps’ UAAP Player of the Week for the women’s and men’s divisions, respectively.

Poyos, who was UAAP Rookie of the Year in Season 86, highlighted her week’s performance with a season-high 28 points in the Golden Tigresses’ 5-set thriller against La Salle, 25-12, 22-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13, on Wednesday, where she also tallied 16 digs.

She then followed it up with an equally productive 21 points in another sweep win, this time against Shaina Nitura and the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 27-25, on Saturday.

The 21-year-old said that the Golden Tigresses were able to get things into gear thanks to their opening day loss to FEU.

“Siguro 'yung pagiging matibay ['yung natutunan namin]. Despite sa natalo man kami nung first game, buo pa rin kami na ayun nga, sinisimulan ulit namin sa training, and 'yung connection namin sa isa’t isa, 'yun 'yung pinakaimportante,” said Poyos.

The sophomore hitter beat out fellow UST teammates Cassie Carballo and Detdet Pepito, FEU’s Gerzel Petallo, NU’s Bella Belen, and La Salle’s Angel Canino for the weekly citation.

Meanwhile in men’s play, Colinares showed off with double digit scoring performances in the Golden Spikers’ two wins over La Salle and Adamson.

The UST High School product scored 17 and 10 points, respectively, in those two wins as the Golden Spikers tied defending champions NU in the top spot with a 3-1 slate.

Like Poyos, Colinares also drew strength from their loss against undefeated FEU to start the season.

“Nung nasaktan po kami nung first game namin, sabi ko sa sarili ko, hindi na puwedeng maulit yun,” said Colinares.

He beat out UST teammate Dux Yambao, NU’s Leo Aringo, and FEU’s Mikko Espartero and Dryx Saavedra for the citation.

Colinares’ scoring outburst proved timely for UST who are still missing reigning MVP Josh Ybanez who suffered a Grade 2 right ankle sprain on opening day.

Currently, both UST teams are in the midst of a three-game win streak.
