A total of four DLSU Lady Spikers found their way in national team head coach Jorge De Brito’s wishlist for Alas Pilipinas for this year, with three new faces joining key holdover Angel Canino.

Apart from the former Rookie-MVP, UAAP Season 87 MVP candidate Shevana Laput, middle blocker Amie Provido, and veteran hitter Alleiah Malaluan were all part of the 33-player wishlist released by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) earlier this week.

The wishlist, sourced by De Brito, will be the foundation of the national team pool for the AVC Challenge Cup, SEA V. League, and the Southeast Asian Games all slated this year. Players in the list are expected to receive formal invites to tryout for the team.

But as far as the three La Salle newcomers are concerned, they are still very much focused on the task at hand: a redemption bid in UAAP Season 87.

Speaking after a character-building win over the UST Golden Tigresses on Saturday night, the Taft-based spikers said that they are still concerned with the UAAP at the moment, though also acknowledging the honor of being recognized by the national team.

“Syempre, I am honored and thankful but at the same time, we’re still playing in the UAAP so, for now, focus muna kami and let’s see what happens next after this,” said Malaluan.

Laput mirrored the same sentiments as they powered La Salle to the comeback victory against UST on Saturday, which marked an end to their four-game losing skid to UST since UAAP Season 86.

“Of course, it’s a big honor for us but at the same time, we’re still in the UAAP season and we still have our own goal of keep going through,” she added.

Meanwhile, Provido reflected on the potential call-up, as it was something that came as a surprise for her, considering the amount of talent among middle blockers in the country.

“Thankful din [ako] sa opportunity, nagulat na lang din ako na nandoon yung name ko,” quipped Provido.

“Pero yung sabi nga ni ate na nasa season pa kami ngayon so dito lang muna kami magf-focus and ito yung uunahin namin.”

As for what it means for the La Salle program, Malaluan believes it is a point for DLSU’s storied history which the national team is determined to learn from. With past and present Lady Spikers making up a portion of the pool, there is enough DLSU heritage to go around.

“Siguro nandoon yung tiwala ng national team sa program ng La Salle and at the same time, La Salle has been winning championships the past few years so syempre yung tiwala and at the same time, maybe they want to adapt something na natutunan ng players,” said Malaluan.

Still, La Salle remains zeroed in on the task at hand, as the Lady Spikers try to chase defending champions NU in UAAP Season 87.

Up next for the troika will be age-old rivals Ateneo Blue Eagles whom they face on Wednesday, April 2, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
