Japan is now at the top of the heap among Asian teams vying for an Olympic slot through the FIBA World Cup.

The Japanese hoopers did it in historic fashion as they defeated Finland, 98-88. There were three things that made it such a groundbreaking achievement. First, Japan came back from an 18-point deficit. Second, it was the country’s first victory over a European squad in FIBA World Cup play. Third, it happened in front of the home crowd at the Okinawa Arena.

What followed after the massive win was an unbridled downpour of emotions from the global tournament’s co-host nation. After the triumphwhich was spearheaded by Josh Hawkinson’s 28 points and 19 rebounds along with Yuki Kawamura’s 25 points and 9 assiststhe Japanese audience and the players themselves couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by the sweet taste of victory

With tears running down their cheeks, Japan celebrated its latest source of national pride.

The entire scene, which you can watch here, was nothing short of inspirational. Players, for their part, also couldn't hide their emotions right as the buzzer sounded.

Filipino hoop fans who have come across that game were mightily impressed. Some of them, who happen to be well-known sports personalities, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their admiration.

CSB Blazers coach and basketball analyst Charles Tiu congratulated Japanese team mentor Tom Hovasse for a masterful coaching job.

“Japan beats Finland. Impressive. Always been a fan of my friend Tom Hovasse great job,” Tiu tweeted.

Japan’s success let PBA star Alex Cabagnot know that no dream is too big.

“Meanwhile, Japan beats Finland. Anything is possible,” posted the nine-time PBA champion.

Like the Japanese crowd, Filipinos will be hoping to fuel Gilas to a big win over Italy on Tuesday. Be part of the action by watching live at the Araneta Coliseum or through the Pilipinas Live app.
